1. What is the International Baccalaureate Organization?

The IB is a non-profit international educational organization that offers schools three programs of international education. The one offered at LCCHS is the MYP or Middle Years Programme that is designed for students aged 11 to 16. The IB offers curriculum materials, assessment procedures, teacher training workshops, school authorization and program evaluation.

2. Can any student enroll in the IB program at LCCHS?

Any student who succeeds at the entrance exam is welcomed in our IB groups. The entrance exam is mandatory.

3. What is the Middle Years Programme?

It is specifically for students aged 11 to 16 (grade 7 through 11). The students have the same discipline subjects (Language A and B, Mathematics, Physical Education, Humanities, Technology, Sciences and Art) but the emphasis is more on the interrelatedness of the subjects. Throughout the years, students will also be asked to develop their capacity to understand areas of concern in a perspective that is more global. They will also have to get involved in their community.

4. What are the Areas of Interaction?

The Areas of Interaction (AOI) are not subjects but tools that help the students to better understand the world that surrounds them and to make connections between the different disciplines. There are five: Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Environment, Health and Social Education and Human Ingenuity.

5. How are students evaluated?

All students are evaluated by their teachers through formative and summative assessments in order to achieve the Provincial requirements. However, students in the IB program receive an added evaluation component based on a set of predetermined criteria for each course..

6. Is the MYP designed only for very capable students?

At LCCHS it is the foundation of our enrichment program. Students must first write an entrance exam to be accepted into the program. Once enrolled, they must adhere to high academic standards. More specifically, they must pass all courses and maintain a 70% average. Another characteristic of IB students is a keen sense of curiosity about the world that surrounds them.

7. Do students get special recognition for participation in a MYP?

At LCCHS, all our students from the IB program receive a regular report card plus an IB report card that assesses according to IB criteria.

8. Is special training required for staff?

Yes. Our staff participates in different training workshops in order to remain current and have a deeper understanding of the program and how to apply it in our school.

9. Are there fees involved in being an IB school?

Yes. Students pay an additional $200 for Level 1 and an additional $75 per year for Levels 2, 3, 4 & 5.

10. What is LaSalle's IB status?

LCCHS continues to implement the IB program while in the reapplication phase. The IB will honour our application until November 2016.
